FDT Group Showcases New Tools for FDT Developers
Developers of DTM’s and FDT Frame Applications were treated to a live preview of the new FDT development environment, FDTExpress, at the recent FDT Developers’ Conference in Amersfoort, Netherlands on November 18th and 19th. “We are on track for the latest release of the FDT standard to our members in February of 2010. The new FDTExpress development environment fully incorporates and self documents the updated standard so the developers can focus on getting the product to market more quickly and effectively,” states Glenn Schulz, Managing Director of the FDT Group in Brussels, Belgium.
FDI Project Team Achieves Development Milestones
The Steering Committee of the Electronic Device Description Language (EDDL) Cooperation Team (ECT) continues their efforts to achieve a common solution for field device integration. The Field Device Integration (FDI) Project Team has successfully worked over the past 18 months identifying use cases that encompass all facets of plant operations: from startup and commissioning; to ongoing maintenance activities and plant operations. This team’s efforts also included drafting an architecture concept that meets the needs of both EDDL and FDT technologies as they are migrated to a common standard.

SERCOS and FDT: Working Together for Open Systems
In November, the user organizations for the two open standards SERCOS III and FDT agreed to collaborate on drawing up an annex to the FDT specification for SERCOS III. SERCOS III will thus be the first high-performance real-time Ethernet communication standard to support FDT Technology, used by many manufacturers to connect field devices to a wide range of software environments. The extension of the FDT specification reinforces the flexibility of SERCOS III as a universal bus for real-time systems in the field of automation.
FDT Group releases new annex for IO-Link
IO-Link is becoming the new worldwide standard for sensor and actor communication in the world of automation. Many well known system suppliers as well as sensor and actor vendors support the new standard and offer IO-Link masters and devices. IO-Link can be easily integrated into existing field bus systems like e.g. PROFIBUS, Interbus, ProfiNet, AS-Interface, EtherCAT, etc.
Interoperability project III
The FDT Group continues its activities to bring the system providers and the device manufacturers together in order to provide end users with integrated solutions right out of the box. Since November 2007, 22 FDT Group member companies have participated in a project at the facility of Dietz Automation GmbH in Neukirchen, Germany. The project is intended to test the interoperability of the FDT/DTM Technology in a very diverse setting.
